On Human Needs

Significance

There are six human needs identified in todays understandings of human growth and development.  These needs tend to drive human behaviour. We spend a great deal of time attempting to meet these needs. All human behaviour has purpose, if we take the time to understand.  With such understanding, we have the capacity to cherish our significant relationships.  Our relationships can deepen and even become sacred.

The first four needs are in the areas of personality level needs, the last two are in the areas of spiritual level needs:
  • Certainty (safety)
  • Variety (we do not maintain one state of awareness forever, we change)
  • Significance (feeling worthy, important)
  • Connection/Love
  • Growth
  • Contribution (we feel we are contributing to something beyond ourselves)
